At En Route Driving School, we want you to pass your driving test—and feel confident doing it. But did you know that being test-ready is not just about getting through the exam? It’s also about keeping roads safe, saving time, and making the most of your lessons.
Let’s break it down.
What does “test-ready” mean?
Being test-ready means, you can drive safely and independently (without help from your instructor) for at least 40 to 45 minutes. This is how long your practical driving test will be.
“Independently” means you should be able to:
- Make safe decisions on your own
- Control the car smoothly
- Follow road signs and rules without help
- Handle different road and traffic situations by yourself
This is not just our opinion. It’s a rule from the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) that all driving instructors in the UK must follow.

Why does it matter?
Taking your test too early can lead to a failure. And failing means:
- Longer waiting times for another test
- Wasting money on rebooking
- More nerves and pressure next time
- More unsafe attempts that could risk safety
The DVSA also keeps track of driving instructors. Every time a pupil takes a test, the instructor’s ID is recorded. So, driving schools like ours are careful to only let pupils book when they’re truly ready.
