Driving Test – Getting Organised.

Below, we have presented a framework that helped our most successful pupils with their driving test. This simple method allowed them to complete their training with little or no disruption, and increased their chances of passing first time:

How many hours do you need?

Step 1.  Do you know how many hours of training you should aim for? Depending on how well you learn coordination-based skills, memory and how regularly you train, you’ll often need between 40-67 hours

Step 2. Work out how many of these hours will be booked with a driving school. The remaining hours require practicing with a family member or friend.  See our guide for more help with this.

Step 3. Pre-book or let your driving instructor/school know how many lessons you plan to book. This will help ensure they can always accommodate you for these hours.

When to book your theory and practical driving test?

Step 4. If possible, aim to book and complete your theory test before the end of combined driving practice hours.

Step 5. After passing your theory test, you should consider booking your practical driving test for after your training. But before you do, you should decide whether you will use your own vehicle or your instructor’s car. This choice is often down to the individual based on preference.

Step 6. If you plan to use your instructor’s car, you will need to discuss their availability before booking your test. Your driving instructor requires at least 1 month’s notice if you want to use their vehicle for a driving test. If using your own vehicle, this shouldn’t be necessary.  T&Cs apply for the use of the driving company’s vehicles.

Step 7. If you progress rapidly and feel confident to take your test earlier than expected, you could reschedule an earlier, more convenient test date.

  • Similarly, if progress is slower, the test date may also be adjusted as required.

If you are unable to complete your theory or secure a practical test for the end of your training, we recommend keeping your skills sharp with weekly practice with family/friends, along with evenly-spaced lessons from your instructor.

Sit the test on the date and pass the first time!
